 | | Preparing the Appliance
When you first remove the foam latex prosthetic from the packaging you may need to remove the excess flashing from around the edges of the prosthetic by carefully pulling apart the edges with your fingers (see “Flashing” photo). To ensure the best and most comfortable fit you must check the prosthetic on the wearer’s face before adhering with spirit gum. Make sure the eyes line up properly and comfortably with your own. Be careful of the areas around the eyes and mouth to make sure that the prosthetic does not overlap the eyes or mouth. If there is overlap, carefully use your finger or a small pair of scissors to trim the edge back to at least ¼” beyond the eye or mouth. On some pieces you may also want to trim any area that overlaps into the hairline if a wig is not going to be worn to disguise the overlapping edges.
Adhering the Appliance
To begin the application you will need Cinema Secrets® Spirit gum, a gum resin based adhesive that is most effectively used when “tacked up.” To make the application of the spirit gum easier, hold the prosthetic onto the face. Use a powder puff and colorless powder; heavily powder the edges, eye sockets, and mouth of the prosthetic, overlapping onto the skin. When removed, this will leave a powdery outline of where the appliance will lay (see “Outline” photo). For best results apply adhesive to both surfaces, the skin, and the prosthetic. Tack the spirit gum until it is matte in appearance, or is pulling at the surface of the skin/prosthetic. Press the prosthetic into place. It helps to adhere one area at a time, in the following order (for smaller appliances follow only the applicable steps):
Step 1. Adhere the nose
Step 2. Adhere around the eyes (be extremely careful not to drip any adhesive into the eyes)
Step 3. Adhere the forehead
Step 4. Adhere the temples
Step 5. Adhere the upper lip
Step 6. Adhere the lower lip and chin
Step 7. Adhere the cheek area
Step 8. Adhere the jaw line
After adhering the appliance, use a small amount of Cinema Secrets® Flesh Latex and a portion of white blending sponge, stipple a small amount of latex overlapping the edges of the prosthetic and onto the skin. Let dry and repeat. Powder latex when dry.
Makeup Application
A Vampire makeup application will be described here, but the steps are similar for other makeup designs. Feel free to choose the appropriate colors for the look you want. If you are going to use cream based makeup, begin by mixing a small amount of castor sealer into the foundation color. This will keep the makeup from discoloring and make it easier to apply. Using a portion of a white blending sponge apply a premixed cream/castor base or RMG makeup that closely matches the natural skin tone to the entire surface of the foam appliance, using a stippling/patting motion. This does not have to be a perfect match. Overlap the edge of the appliance onto the skin (see “Base Color” photo). Using the same sponge, with a makeup shade approximately 2 – 4 shades darker than the foundation, apply the makeup to the hollows/contours of the face. Eye sockets, under the cheek bones, temples, furrowed area of the brow. Lightly blend (see “Contour” photo). Using a fresh portion of a white blending sponge and a makeup color approximately 2- 4 shades lighter than the foundation shade, stipple makeup onto the areas of the face that are to be highlighted: cheekbones, bridge of the nose, sides of the forehead, brow, etc. Lightly blend (see “Highlight” photo). Using a small amount of a deep red tone (Cinema Secrets “Bruised Red”) on the same sponge, lightly pat/stipple this around the eye area and cheek bones to give the character a more realistic look. If at this point the makeup isn’t exactly matching the skin tone, mix a small amount of white and yellow makeup together to create a pasty light yellow color and apply, and using a portion of a white sponge lightly pat/stipple this color onto the lower cheek area and anywhere else you see that it may need some adjusting. To make the makeup design more personal you may want to add veins, tattoos, or even spots and variant coloration. Set the makeup with colorless powder and a powder puff. Remove excess powder with a damp powder brush or damp tissue (see “Final” photo).
Removal
Use a brush or cotton swab to gently work Cinema Secrets® Makeup & Adhesive Remover onto and under the edge of the appliance. Continue this process until the entire appliance is removed. Be careful around the eyes and mouth areas. Remove any residual spirit gum on the face with additional remover.
Cleaning and Storage
After you have carefully removed the appliance, you may choose to save it for later use. Gently wash the appliance with mild dish soap and allow to dry. Store in an airtight container.
Tips and Tricks
For a more life-like sheen, apply a thin layer of K-Y Jelly over the top of the finished/powdered makeup. For open cuts and wounds use Cinema Secrets® FX Blood or Blood
Gel for that extra touch of realism.
